Cinematography of VCU Riot

VCU Riot after 2011 Final Four from MONDIAL on Vimeo.

@ 1:54 does the girl holding her hands in the air have real justification to why she is protesting? The students were celebrating way to hard and got out of control and are there to suppress the situation. Come on now I know we all want peace but the actions must be mutual!!!

  1. 1. What are the students chanting? I can't understand it?

    2. Your question is a great one, because the videographer seems to be siding with the students, but I don't see that the police were particularly violent.

    3. From a rhetoric point of view -- how does the music change the appeal of this video? I also noticed that the video used images of beautiful, smiling people, but the police are depicted as faceless. What's up with that?
    Very thought-provoking!

  2. The music used in this video attempts to make a basketball celebration seem depressing. In essence, it draws sympathy for the students. Although their behaviors were not heavily destructive or dangerous, it can be inferred that police intervention was necessary to respond to other incidents that not shown in this video. Showing the faces of the students gives them personality. The students symbolize freedom of expression, excitement, and rebellion. The faceless police officers represent the need for discipline, order, and ultimately detract from celebration. Had the police not intervened, this celebration could have been very destructive to the city, similar to what happened at the University of Albany on St. Patricks day.
